12/17/2001 Entry: "Changes!"

We've switched our weblog software over from Blogger to Greymatter. This is a good thing because:

  • Blogger's been really flaky for us recently, and it was becoming a pain to post anything. (Although we still hold a place in our hearts for blogger since they did make us as a blog of note and put us on the map.. well, a little map).

  • Now there's a searchable archive. We also moved the old Blogger generated archives (March 2000 to November 2001) to the new system, except those archives aren't searchable (but all the new stuff is).

  • Commenting on individual posts is possible by clicking on the 2 comments link bellow. The Dirty Rumors message board still works.

  • We be looking pretty now. The old NY skyline layout was jarringly outdated all of a sudden, and the more recent rocketship-just-floating-on-the-page layout was a bit boring. Now, thanks to the moon, we look good.

Moving from blogger to GM was easy, as long as you’re comfortable with html. It also helps if ya know something about ftp, chmod, etc, but then the manual is pretty good, takes you through that as well.

Ok, here's what we did to get blogger archives listed on the greymatter archives page..

we ftp'd to the directory that had the blogger archive files, and copied all the files that end in "archives.html" into greymatter’s “entries” directory.

Now, from the template editor section in greymatter, edit the master index template to include links to your blogger archive files. For instance, it might look something like this:

May 2000

April 2000

March 2000

(hover your mouse over the links to see how it looks in the status bar)

Make sure your blogger links are below the "logarchivelist" tag so your new greymatter archives appear above the old blogger archives.

Good luck.

Hi, How difficult is it to move from Blogger to Greymatter? Do you have some instructions? I'd appreciate any help. I just have a year of archives and wish I could do it. Thanks.
